A mother and her daughter shared their incredible survival story after narrowly escaping a devastating volcanic eruption in Montserrat that destroyed a significant portion of the island. Olivette and Adena Johnson recounted their harrowing experiences of evading death during the catastrophic Soufriere Hills eruptions of the mid-1990s. Despite the ongoing volcanic activity on the island, the resilient duo continues to reside there, with Adena showcasing the vibrant life of Montserrat on her TikTok page.

Their journey included a temporary relocation to the US Virgin Islands before returning to Montserrat, where they garnered attention through a series of informative TikTok videos explaining their decision to live near an active volcano. The volcanic eruptions in 1995 and 1997 resulted in tragic losses, with families forced to flee to other countries, including the UK due to Montserrat’s status as a British overseas territory.

The volcanic events led to a significant decline in the island’s population, but it has gradually rebounded over the years. Olivette vividly recalled the tense moments of evacuation, where she narrowly escaped danger twice, emphasizing the swift actions taken to ensure their safety during the chaos of the eruptions.

Adena, who was a child at the time of the disasters, remembered seeking refuge in churches turned shelters as the community grappled with the aftermath. Despite the challenges, Olivette persevered in her role as a seamstress, even finding support at the airport where she continued her work amidst the upheaval caused by the volcanic activities.

The family’s resilience shone through as they resettled in Montserrat, actively contributing to the reconstruction efforts in their village. Nowadays, they take pride in their tight-knit community and are passionate about showcasing the island’s remarkable recovery and spirit of unity.

Adena, in addition to her marketing job, utilizes TikTok to share their survival narrative, aiming to educate younger generations about the island’s volcanic history and the enduring strength of Montserratians. Their story serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the ability to rise from adversity, inspiring others to embrace their heritage and share their experiences for future generations to cherish.
