NATO has once again scrambled fighter jets as a Russian aircraft trespassed into its airspace for the third consecutive day. The military alliance was prompted to intercept a suspected spy plane over the Baltic Sea today due to the plane’s lack of a clear flight plan.
As per information from the German Delegation to NATO, the aircraft in question was identified as an Ilyushin Il-20M, a plane equipped with advanced intelligence capabilities, such as radar, signals intelligence, and electronic warfare systems. These planes are commonly used for monitoring communications and air defense systems. The Russian aircraft took off from Russia and entered international airspace without establishing communication protocols.
Despite attempts to visually confirm the aircraft’s identity, it evaded identification procedures. Initially, the German Air Force (Bundeswehr) identified the plane and then handed over the escort duties to their Swedish NATO counterparts.
