The global spotlight turned to the tragic incident involving Jay Slater, a British teenager who went missing during his vacation in Tenerife. The disappearance of the apprentice bricklayer in June 2024 led to an extensive search that ended with the discovery of his body a month later in a remote area of the Spanish island, near the location of his last mobile phone signal.
Channel 4 is set to delve into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 19-year-old in a new documentary titled “The Disappearance of Jay Slater.” The documentary includes interviews with Jay’s close circle and sheds light on the events leading to his demise, including his interactions with individuals at an Airbnb before his final moments.
Jay had been attending the NRG music festival in Playa de las Americas with friends when he left a club with two acquaintances, Ayub Qassim and Steven Roccas, whom he had met during his trip. They proceeded to their Airbnb in Masca in the early hours of June 17, where Jay took one of his last photos before leaving at around 8 am to trek back home, conversing with a friend on the phone just before his device lost power.
His lifeless body was eventually located on July 15 by a mountain rescue team in the Juan Lopez ravine. The autopsy results indicated that his death resulted from injuries sustained in an accidental fall, ruling out any foul play.
Qassim, a key figure in the investigation and a former convicted drug dealer, testified during the May 2025 inquest into Jay’s passing. He recounted the events of the night, emphasizing that Jay did not steal a watch as suggested in a social media post. Qassim also mentioned offering to transport Jay back later in the morning but ultimately went to bed, leaving Jay to find his own way.
The documentary provides a deeper look into the circumstances surrounding Jay’s tragic end, offering insights from those closely connected to the case.
