“NHL Prospect Matthew Mayich Hospitalized in Arizona”

Date:

NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident that occurred during off-ice training, as reported by the Ontario Hockey League.

Mayich, aged 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. His player history indicates that he participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s.

According to the OHL, Mayich was hospitalized on August 20 while preparing for the 2026-27 season in Arizona. The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concerns and well-wishes for Mayich’s recovery.

When contacted by CBC Hamilton, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, mentioned that a student from the hockey team collapsed during a morning outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident without disclosing the student’s identity.

Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, conveyed the organization’s support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery as he receives medical treatment in Arizona. The Blues also extended their deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging period.

OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments in the league’s statement, expressing thoughts for Mayich, his parents, and the entire Mayich family. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously shared messages of congratulations with Mayich when he joined the ’67s in 2021 and when he was selected by the Blues in 2023. Mayich had been a part of the organization since the age of nine.
