Nioh 3 Preview: Team Ninja’s Latest Soulslike Adventure

In our recent hands-on experience during the Bakumatsu period with Nioh 3, it became evident that Team Ninja is pushing the boundaries to make this installment their most refined Soulslike game yet.

Among the Soulslike franchises, Nioh stands out as a dynamic and fast-paced alternative to the challenging gameplay pioneered by FromSoftware. With its emphasis on fluid movement, diverse weapon selection, and Yokai abilities, Nioh has already established itself as a robust series.

After spending approximately four hours exploring Nioh 3, it’s apparent that Team Ninja is expanding the series to new heights. The game introduces a larger scale with a new ninja combat style and more open-ended level designs while retaining the essence of the Nioh experience.

The time-travel element in Nioh 3 immerses players in the Bakumatsu era of Japan, embodying the new protagonist, Tokugawa Takechiyo. Engaging in combat, switching stances, and utilizing Guardian Spirit skills felt familiar yet refreshing, typical of the Nioh gameplay.

One notable departure in Nioh 3 is the shift towards an “open-field” level design, deviating from the linear paths seen in previous titles. The multi-area maps offer various approaches to exploration and combat, with optional challenges that enhance the protagonist’s abilities.

Unique encounters like enemy bases and unexpected boss rushes provide diverse gameplay experiences, keeping players engaged and challenged throughout the game. The game’s open-world design introduces surprises that both delight and test the player’s skills.

The addition of the new Ninja combat style in Nioh 3 adds a layer of complexity to the gameplay, offering faster and more agile combat mechanics. Players can seamlessly switch between combat styles to counter different enemy attacks, enhancing the strategic depth of battles.

While the Ninja style introduces more combat options, it complements the existing Samurai combat style, creating a balanced and diverse fighting system. The game’s core mechanics, such as the Ki Pulse feature, remain integral to maintaining combat effectiveness.

Overall, Nioh 3 promises a deep and engaging experience, with a blend of new features and familiar elements that enhance the gameplay. The game’s open-field design and expanded combat styles offer players greater flexibility in how they approach challenges, ensuring a compelling and rewarding gaming experience.
