Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, during the weekend to sing along with their favorite musicians at a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence.
Daisy Chain Fields, a charity music festival initiated by pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, emulated the pioneering Lilith Fair from the 1990s by featuring an all-female lineup. The festival showcased a mix of established and emerging stars, including queer pop artist Chappell Roan, rapper Doechii, and iconic punk and rock bands like Bikini Kill and Garbage.
Before the festival commenced on Saturday, Rodrigo revealed that they had raised $10 million for the event’s ten non-profit partners, such as Planned Parenthood, the National Institute for Reproductive Health, and Black Mamas Matter Alliance. This amount was generously matched by Melinda French Gates, doubling the total raised to $20 million.
Rodrigo first announced the festival back in June, promising that performers would participate for free, with all proceeds directed to organizations supporting the advancement of women and girls. The festival paid tribute to trailblazers by featuring special performances, including Rodrigo singing “Landslide” with Stevie Nicks and surprise appearances by Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan.
The festival, named “Daisy Chain” to symbolize unity and strength in diversity, took place amidst ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the United States post the Roe v Wade reversal in 2022. The event served as a beacon of hope and solidarity in the face of regressive policies affecting women’s rights.
In addition to the musical acts, attendees could engage with various art installations at the festival, including a LEGO mural and a display chronicling the Riot Grrrl movement. The atmosphere was described as “wholesome” by many, with festival-goers expressing gratitude for being part of a historic event supporting crucial causes.
