“Our approach is centered on camaraderie,” my instructor affirms, handing me an unconventional racket designed for my introduction to padel. This sport, dubbed the fastest-growing in the UK, is gaining popularity in popular vacation spots.

Spain leads the way in this emerging activity, a blend of tennis and squash that originated in Mexico. However, Portugal is also embracing the trend, exemplified by my visit to Pine Cliffs Luxury Collection Resort, a sprawling 72-hectare family-friendly retreat in the Algarve. The resort boasts various amenities such as the prestigious Annabel Croft Tennis and Padel Academy, a nine-hole golf course, a modern gym, an award-winning spa, yoga, Pilates, and an expanded padel facility.

To meet the rising demand, one of the tennis courts has been converted into three padel courts, bringing the total to four, equipped with a glass back wall and metal fencing. This setup is ideal for a multi-generational experience, as highlighted by Coach Labisa Palmera, a padel club co-founder. He notes the broad appeal of padel, attracting individuals from eight to 80 years old, emphasizing its social nature, making it perfect for family vacations.

Padel is reported as the fastest-growing racket sport globally, with over 25 million active players in 110 countries. Noteworthy figures like Andre Agassi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Shakira have taken up the sport. The game’s simplicity, doubles format, tennis-like scoring, underarm serving, and wall-assisted returns make it accessible and enjoyable for all ages.

Apart from sports, Pine Cliffs Resort offers diverse dining experiences in its 15 restaurants, each exuding a unique ambiance. The culinary offerings range from dining under lemon trees to savoring fresh seafood and Japanese delicacies. Healthy options like ginger shots, acai bowls, and nutritious dishes complement the active lifestyle promoted at the resort.

The resort’s lush green surroundings, featuring over 5,000 trees, provide a serene setting for various activities. Access to Falesia Beach, renowned for its golden sands and orange cliffs, offers opportunities for water sports and family-friendly beach activities. Guests can also engage in tennis, golf, yoga, and spa treatments for a well-rounded vacation experience.

For enthusiasts like me, padel stands out as a preferred pastime due to its simplicity and multi-generational appeal. Partnering with family members or new acquaintances for friendly matches enhances the experience, fostering camaraderie and skills development. As we return home, we seek nearby courts to continue honing our padel techniques and reliving the enjoyable moments from our vacation.

Travelers can easily reach Faro, Algarve, Portugal, from various UK airports. Accommodation at Pine Cliffs Resort near Albufeira starts at approximately £218 per night in October, offering a luxurious retreat in the heart of the Algarve.
