A passenger, Neuma Domingos, still grapples with the aftermath of a train incident over three years ago, where the train suddenly braked at a speed three times higher than the limit. The incident occurred during a Lumo service journey from Newcastle to London on April 17, 2022. Neuma suffered a knee injury as she was thrown to the ground when the train abruptly stopped, causing panic among passengers.

Neuma, 23 at the time, described the terrifying experience in the rear carriage, where the train was vigorously shaking from side to side, creating a sense of imminent derailment. Luggage and passengers were tossed around, creating a chaotic and distressing scene. An investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch later revealed that the train nearly overturned due to the driver’s excessive speed approaching Peterborough, where the speed limit was significantly lower.

Despite the passage of time, Neuma, a Kings College London graduate, continues to endure chronic pain in her right knee and grapples with the emotional trauma of the incident. She highlighted the ongoing challenges she faces with her knee, expressing concerns about the lasting impact. Neuma also shared the difficulty of resuming train travel, given the lingering fear and memories of the traumatic event.

Seeking support in her recovery and seeking accountability from Lumo, Neuma enlisted the help of serious injury specialists at Slater and Gordon. Tim Gaskell, an associate representing Neuma, emphasized the significant physical and psychological toll the incident had on her. He underscored the preventable nature of the incident had the train adhered to the speed limit, expressing satisfaction in aiding Neuma in securing a settlement to facilitate her journey towards closure.

The Mirror has reached out to Lumo for a comment on the incident.
