A recent study suggests that selling vapes in plain packaging can help reduce their attractiveness to young individuals. Researchers from UCL and King’s College London discovered that adults are inclined to purchase e-cigarettes even when presented in plain packs.

Vapes are recognized as a useful tool for smoking cessation; however, the increasing usage among children who have never smoked is a significant concern. The study, involving over 2,700 children and young adults and nearly 4,000 adults, revealed that 53% of youths indicated their peers would be interested in trying vapes if they were in colorful packaging.

When shown vapes in standardized packs with regular flavor descriptions, the interest among youths dropped to 38%. Interestingly, adults showed similar levels of interest regardless of whether the packs were white or branded.

The ongoing Tobacco and Vapes Bill, under review in the House of Lords, aims to prohibit brightly colored packaging and vape flavors that appeal to children, such as bubble gum and cotton candy. Additionally, the legislation seeks to make Britain smoke-free by restricting individuals born after January 1, 2009, from purchasing tobacco products.

Earlier this year, a ban on disposable vapes was implemented. Dr. Eve Taylor, the lead author from UCL’s Department of Behavioral Science and Health, emphasized the need for vape packaging and flavor regulations that deter non-smokers and young people while supporting smokers in using vapes for quitting.

Participants in the study were shown various types of packs, including branded ones, plain packs with limited flavor descriptions, and standardized packs with flavor codes instead of names. Hazel Cheeseman, the chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health, emphasized the importance of regulating vapes to protect children without impeding their role as smoking cessation aids.

In related news, upcoming plans will grant local communities the authority to prevent the opening of new vaping and gambling shops to revitalize British high streets. Keir Starmer will unveil town planning changes to empower communities in deciding store locations and quantities in their towns.

Anticipated reforms by the Prime Minister will allocate funds to support these changes, with investments directed towards local councils and community projects. Efforts are underway to facilitate community ownership of vacant shops to prevent high streets from being overrun by vape shops, gambling establishments, and barbershops.
