A police vehicle was deliberately set ablaze last evening amidst escalating unrest related to anti-immigration sentiments. Reports indicate that a young girl was among those injured during the disturbances near Citywest Hotel in Saggart, County Dublin. The tumult followed an alleged sexual assault involving a child, believed to be the same girl.

Individuals threw objects at law enforcement officers guarding the hotel, which currently serves as temporary housing for migrants, culminating in the disturbing spectacle of a police van going up in flames. Video footage circulating online captured young men yelling, “Get them out,” as they pelted projectiles at the officers.

Following the incident, six individuals were apprehended, and the Irish police force, An Garda Siochana, disclosed that one of its officers sustained a foot injury during the uproar connected to immigration issues. The law enforcement stated, “This was not a peaceful protest. The displayed violence was thuggish and aimed at intimidating and harming others.”

The sexual assault reportedly occurred near the hotel early Monday morning, prompting locals to organize a protest on Tuesday, which eventually devolved into chaos around 9 pm. In a video clip, individuals, many masked, were seen brandishing Irish flags and chanting before launching stones and other objects at police officers, with the footage later surfacing on social media.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly denounced the events, emphasizing that while peaceful protests are typically accommodated, the recent actions were unequivocally violent and aimed at law enforcement officers. He praised the officers’ professionalism and courage in ensuring public safety amidst the chaos, deploying various units to restore order.

This marks the second consecutive night of protests outside the hotel, which serves as state accommodation for asylum seekers. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan vowed that those involved in the violence would face legal consequences, emphasizing the need to condemn the events and affirming that a robust response from law enforcement would ensue.

The incident mirrors similar unrest witnessed in various UK towns and cities over the summer. However, in several instances, anti-racism groups staged counter-protests, notably in Bristol and Liverpool.
