Prince Andrew has relinquished all his titles following discussions between King Charles and Prince William. The decision comes after allegations surrounding his association with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre, which he denies, were deemed as a distraction to the monarchy’s work. In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew expressed his commitment to prioritize his family and country, leading to his decision to no longer use his titles and honors.
The move was made in consultation with King Charles, Prince William, and other members of the Royal Family. Despite giving up his titles, Prince Andrew will retain his status as a prince and remain eighth in line to the throne. However, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson will revert to her maiden name and relinquish her courtesy title as the Duchess of York.
Furthermore, Prince Andrew will not participate in royal events such as the annual Garter service and Christmas celebrations at Sandringham. Although he will technically retain his dukedom, he will no longer actively use it. The titles and honors he has renounced include The Duke of York, the Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh, and his knighthood as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
These decisions come amidst ongoing legal proceedings related to allegations of sexual assault made by Virginia Giuffre against Prince Andrew. Despite settling a civil case with Giuffre, the prince maintains his innocence and denies any wrongdoing in connection with the Epstein scandal.
