Prince Andrew has made a significant announcement stating that he will relinquish all his royal titles, including the Duke of York, due to the persistent allegations surrounding him. This decision comes in the wake of various controversies, such as his connections to Jeffrey Epstein and a Chinese operative. As a result, Andrew will lose his membership in the Order of the Garter but will retain his status as a prince by birthright from Queen Elizabeth II. Correspondingly, his former wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, will forego her title and be referred to simply as Sarah Ferguson.
In a concise statement issued on a Friday evening, Prince Andrew expressed, “After deliberations with The King, and my immediate and extended family, we have concluded that the ongoing accusations against me divert attention from the duties of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have resolved, as always, to prioritize my obligations to my family and nation. I stand by my decision made five years ago to step back from public life. With the consent of His Majesty, we believe it is necessary for me to take a further step. Consequently, I will no longer utilize my title or the honors bestowed upon me. As previously stated, I vehemently refute the accusations leveled against me.”
The decision follows reports from a royal insider indicating that King Charles reached a tipping point regarding the continuous scandals involving Prince Andrew. The prince has been under intense scrutiny for his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged involvement with a Chinese spy. Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims, accused Andrew of sexual misconduct on three occasions in 2001 when she was 17 and under Epstein’s control. She alleged that the incidents occurred in London, New York, and on Epstein’s private island.
Andrew has consistently denied these allegations, claiming no recollection of meeting Giuffre and suggesting that a widely circulated photograph showing him with his arm around her may have been manipulated. In 2021, Giuffre filed a lawsuit against him under the US Child Victims Act, resulting in an out-of-court settlement in 2022 for a reported sum of £12 million without an admission of guilt.
Further scrutiny arose from Andrew’s continued association with Epstein post-conviction and a controversial BBC interview in 2019 defending their relationship. More recently, revelations emerged about Andrew meeting with Cai Qi, a high-ranking Chinese official implicated in the China spy scandal.
