Quebec officials are expressing strong disapproval following the tragic passing of a four-year-old boy in Ivujivik, Nunavik, amid reports that he was denied medical care.
In a press statement released on Thursday, Québec Solidaire representative Sol Zanetti is demanding explanations regarding the death of Jusi Padlayat, who reportedly passed away on August 3 after being taken to the local clinic by his parents multiple times for stomach discomfort but allegedly not receiving treatment.
According to an interview with La Presse, Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, stated that medical personnel disregarded the family’s concerns and advised them to administer Advil or Tylenol to the child. Mangiuk recounted that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1, taken to the local nursing station, and later transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he succumbed two days later.
Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering of a child as unacceptable and raised concerns about possible neglect and systemic racism in healthcare services. Zanetti called for an investigation into Padlayat’s death by the Commissioner of Children’s Rights and Welfare.
The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) also advocated for enhanced healthcare services in northern regions, suggesting increased telemedicine options as a viable solution. Sandrine Rioux, the QLP candidate for Ungava, which encompasses Ivujivik, emphasized the importance of ensuring access to necessary care for residents regardless of their location.
The tragic incident involving Padlayat was highlighted by the Joyce’s Principle Office as a stark reminder of the need for genuine listening and concrete actions to uphold dignity in services provided to Indigenous communities. The office drew parallels between Padlayat’s death and that of Joyce Echaquan, emphasizing the significance of respecting families’ concerns and preventing similar occurrences.
The Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have committed to conducting both internal and external reviews following the incident. The Quebec coroners office is also investigating the matter, though no details on causes or circumstances surrounding the death have been disclosed. The Montreal Children’s Hospital refrained from commenting on individual cases.
