Nearly 60,000 knives have been confiscated from public circulation since July of last year, according to the most recent data available. Advocates have hailed this as a significant milestone, while government officials affirm that they are on course to achieve their objective of reducing knife-related crimes by half over the next ten years.

Statistics from the Home Office indicate that 7,512 knives and weapons were voluntarily handed in during a summertime surrender initiative. Additionally, 47,795 zombie-style knives and machetes were relinquished last year. Border Force intercepted 3,334 knives, while 618 blades were seized through operations under the County Lines Programme.

Sandra Campbell, leader of the advocacy group Word 4 Weapons, emphasized the importance of each surrendered weapon, noting that it represents a potential tragedy averted in local communities. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stressed the urgency of addressing the issue, stating that too many young lives are lost annually due to knife-related incidents. She affirmed the government’s commitment to combating knife crime relentlessly until the desired reduction is achieved.

Recent crime data revealed a 5% decline in knife-related offenses over the past year, with 51,527 incidents reported in the 12 months leading up to June, compared to 54,215 the previous year. There was also an 18% decrease in knife-related homicides during the same period. The Labour Party has pledged to halve such crimes within a decade.

Patrick Green, CEO of the Ben Kinsella Trust, established in memory of 16-year-old Ben who was fatally stabbed in 2008, commended the latest data. He emphasized the significance of removing dangerous weapons, particularly ninja swords, as a critical step toward enhancing community safety and protecting young individuals from violence.

Faron Paul, founder of FazAmnesty, an organization focused on reducing knife crime through initiatives such as knife bins and mentoring programs, highlighted the collaborative effort that led to the removal of thousands of weapons from the streets. He expressed confidence in the collective efforts aimed at reducing knife crime by 50% over the next decade.

Legislation known as Ronan’s Law, named after the murdered 16-year-old Ronan Kanda, has banned ninja swords since August 1. Before its enforcement, surrender bins and mobile bans were implemented in various regions including London, Manchester, and the West Midlands. Ronan’s mother, Pooja, expressed gratitude for the government’s actions in memory of her son and for the safety of all young individuals.

The Crime and Policing Bill, currently under Parliamentary review, includes provisions to enhance age verification processes for online knife sales and delivery. Tech industry leaders will face strict penalties for hosting illegal knife-related content online.
