A road worker described as “determined and strong-minded” had his leg severely injured after it got caught in a resurfacing machine. Brandon Belshaw sustained life-altering injuries on October 3, necessitating an urgent blood transfusion at the scene before being airlifted to a hospital.
Following the accident, Brandon underwent numerous surgeries and spent five days on a ventilator. He regained consciousness four days later to learn that his right leg had been amputated. His brother, Jordan Smith, praised Brandon’s resilience and positive attitude, highlighting his selflessness and strength.
The incident occurred while Brandon was working in Doncaster, leading to the closure of Leicester Avenue in Intake by the South Yorkshire Police as emergency services responded. Doctors from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance provided immediate medical assistance before he was transferred to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.
In a show of solidarity, a fundraiser initiated by Brandon’s family has raised over £20,000 to aid his recovery. Family and friends are planning a 12-mile hike in the Lake District, including climbing Helvellyn, to further support Brandon. The challenging trek symbolizes his perseverance and determination in overcoming obstacles.
The funds collected will contribute to Brandon’s physical and mental rehabilitation, covering expenses such as physiotherapy and prosthetics. Additionally, the money will assist in potential home modifications and transportation adjustments to ensure Brandon’s continued independence. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity.
