On a summer evening of June 29, 2022, my son Ronan was walking home when two sixteen-year-old boys approached him from behind and viciously attacked him with a 22‑inch ninja sword, inflicting fatal wounds to his abdomen and heart.

The assailants had purchased the deadly weapon online using a fake ID, highlighting the alarming ease at which such dangerous items were being sold without proper scrutiny. This incident prompted me to question the accountability of retailers who profit from selling weapons designed to cause harm or fatality.

I was determined to seek justice and change the system that allowed such tragic events to occur. Meeting with Sir Keir Starmer, the Leader of the Opposition at that time, was a turning point for me, as he listened attentively to my concerns as a grieving mother fighting for justice.

Sir Keir Starmer made a solemn promise to ban ninja swords if he came into power, a commitment that has been fulfilled by the current Prime Minister. The Labour Government has prioritized addressing knife crime, swiftly implementing measures to tackle this pressing issue.

Collaborating with government officials, I played a key role in the establishment of Ronan’s Law, which not only prohibits the sale of ninja swords but also imposes hefty fines on tech companies failing to remove knife-related content and penalizes retailers selling knives to minors. The introduction of a stringent two-step ID verification process ensures proper checks are conducted.

These stringent measures have effectively closed loopholes that previously allowed the unchecked sale of dangerous weapons online. The successful knife surrender initiative, launched in conjunction with Ronan’s Law, has seen over 7,000 weapons surrendered, contributing to a significant reduction in knife-enabled crimes.

Furthermore, the Young Futures programme, aimed at prevention, focuses on identifying and supporting vulnerable youth to prevent them from engaging in criminal activities. By investing in early intervention and community support, the government is addressing the root causes of violence and offering young people a positive path forward.

As a mother who tragically lost her son to knife crime, I am deeply grateful for the government’s commitment to enacting change and honoring Ronan’s memory through impactful legislation. I urge continued collaboration between authorities, campaigners, and communities to sustain progress and further reduce knife crime rates.

The implementation of Ronan’s Law stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to protecting lives and creating a safer environment for all. I stand in solidarity with the mission to halve knife crime within the next decade, emphasizing the importance of ongoing efforts to combat this pervasive issue.
