Rory McIlroy has endorsed a new trophy aimed at recognizing the top-performing DP World Tour player in the Majors each season. However, the rule states that the Masters champion, like McIlroy, is ineligible to win this award.

Having made history as the first European to achieve the career Grand Slam by triumphing at Augusta in April, McIlroy is now the inspiration behind the newly established Rory McIlroy Award, acknowledging the tour member with the best performance across all four Major Championships yearly.

Despite his achievements, McIlroy humorously expressed his ineligibility for the award, stating, “It would be cool but I am ineligible for it. I thought it would be better if I wasn’t. I think it was a decision made by all of us.”

This accolade marks McIlroy as the fifth player to have an award named after him on the DP World Tour, recognizing his exceptional on-course accomplishments and continuous support for the tour, including participation in events in India and Australia.

Reflecting on this honor, McIlroy commented, “It’s a huge honor to have an award under my name which is very, very cool, to recognize the best DP World Tour player and their performance in the four major championships over the year.”

At 36 years old, McIlroy joins a prestigious group of golf legends who have completed the career Grand Slam, and looks ahead to a promising future where his name will be associated with this esteemed award.

McIlroy is currently aiming to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championships, pursuing a fourth consecutive Race to Dubai victory to surpass his shared record with Ballesteros. Acknowledging the sustained excellence required in the sport, McIlroy praised the competitive landscape he navigates within the European golf scene.

After a strong performance in Abu Dhabi, McIlroy expressed confidence in his game and looks forward to maintaining his form in the upcoming challenges.
