Hackers believed to be associated with Vladimir Putin’s group targeted eight UK military bases, leaking Ministry of Defence (MoD) staff information, including names and emails, on the dark web. The breach occurred through a contractor used by the MoD, bypassing the Armed Forces’ cyber defenses. The breach is under investigation by the MoD, suspected to be linked to the Russian group Lynx. RAF Lakenheath, a site hosting US Air Force F-35 stealth jets and suspected nuclear weapons, was among the affected locations.
This cyber attack follows a recent warning from the National Cyber Security Centre regarding the surge in hacking incidents in the UK. The country witnessed a record 204 hacking attacks in the year leading up to September. The MoD spokesperson stated that they are actively looking into the breach to protect national interests and sensitive operational data.
Last year, a significant hack exposed personal information of service personnel and veterans, including names, bank details, and addresses, affecting up to 272,000 individuals. Additionally, Russia was accused of targeting a Spanish Air Force plane carrying the Spanish defense minister over Kaliningrad. The minister was en route to Lithuania for a scheduled meeting with the Lithuanian defense minister.
In response to these cybersecurity threats, it is crucial for organizations and individuals to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their data and systems.
