A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling operations to extract hydrogen from underground sources on a commercial scale, aiming to demonstrate its viability as an alternative to hydrogen produced from fossil fuels.
Regina-based Max Power Mining recently commenced drilling its third well at the Lawson Complex, a rock formation in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, heralding a new era in primary energy sources.
Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, emphasized the importance of hydrogen as a key molecule for various industrial processes, including ammonia production and petroleum refining. He highlighted the need to transition to more sustainable sourcing methods, with natural hydrogen offering a promising solution.
Hydrogen, a versatile gas, serves as a clean fuel and a source of electricity in fuel cells, producing only water as a byproduct without emitting greenhouse gases. Its potential applications include decarbonizing sectors such as transportation and steel production.
Currently, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is grey hydrogen, derived from fossil fuels like natural gas and coal, contributing significantly to carbon dioxide emissions. In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers a cleaner alternative but remains economically challenging.
Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a unique opportunity as it can be extracted from underground deposits with relatively lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to industrial production processes. By leveraging existing drilling techniques used in extracting natural gas and helium, companies like Max Power Mining aim to offer a more cost-effective approach to hydrogen extraction.
The geological formations in Saskatchewan, rich in hydrogen deposits, provide a favorable environment for capturing hydrogen from porous sand beds sealed under layers of shale and salt.
