Mitchell Lawrie has made history by becoming the youngest player to secure three senior men’s titles, surpassing Luke Littler’s previous record. The Scottish prodigy clinched the WDF Irish Classic in Killarney on Saturday, only four days after turning 15.
In a dominant performance, Lawrie defeated Ronan McDonagh in the final match, hitting four 180s and maintaining an impressive 98.60 average to secure a 5-1 victory. Just before the final, he also claimed the Irish Classic Youths title by defeating Kaya Basal 4-1 with an average of 90.95.
Lawrie’s family, including his father Fraser and grandfather Dougie, were present at the INEC Arena in Kerry, Ireland, to witness his remarkable achievement. Littler set the previous record at 15 years, five months, and four days, but Lawrie surpassed this by five months. He is now set to compete in the upcoming WDF world championships in Lakeside.
While Lawrie gears up for future competitions, the reigning PDC World Champion is preparing to defend his title at Alexandra Palace. Lawrie, who previously won the British Open and Welsh Open this year, is eagerly anticipating potential matchups with top competitors.
Although Lawrie will have to wait until he turns 16 to face Littler in PDC competitions, his family remains supportive of his journey. In an interview with The Sun, Lawrie’s grandfather emphasized their pride in Mitchell’s accomplishments and highlighted the importance of him enjoying the sport without the pressure of comparisons.
Dougie mentioned that he introduced Mitchell to darts at a young age, instilling in him a competitive spirit that has contributed to his success on the dartboard. Lawrie’s family is focused on his happiness and fulfillment in playing darts, rather than solely on his achievements or comparisons to other players.
Before the rise of contemporary darts stars like Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, and Luke Humphries, the sport experienced its initial golden era, marked by legendary figures such as Eric Bristow and Jocky Wilson. As the World Championship approaches, fans have the opportunity to reflect on the game’s iconic players and moments from the past.
