A recent report by consumer group Which? reveals that the major mobile networks, including EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, highlights that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

Which? conducted the survey to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which are not. The results indicate that the established “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality.

Leading the rankings are Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, while EE performed the best among the major providers, ranking ninth. O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.

The report emphasizes the significant price discrepancy between the Big Four and smaller networks. Customers on the major networks pay an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, whereas users on smaller networks pay only around £9 per month for similar services.

Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, the report highlights that customers can still enjoy comparable coverage and service quality since many smaller networks utilize the infrastructure of larger networks. Switching between providers is also relatively straightforward, with some customers able to change networks in as little as 10 minutes.

One Which? member shared their experience of leaving O2 for SMARTY, saving around £200 a year by switching to a more affordable plan within minutes. Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger firms by offering better customer service and more cost-effective deals.

Hitchins encourages customers approaching the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers that offer better value and service quality. The rankings from Which? indicate that smaller providers are excelling in customer satisfaction and affordability compared to the industry’s leading mobile companies.
