Hundreds of tourists have flocked to Spain to witness the solar eclipse happening on Wednesday. However, concerns rise due to the high temperatures and increased wildfire risk in the country. Virginia Barcones, the secretary general for civil protection and emergencies at Spain’s Interior Ministry, emphasized the need to avoid activities that could ignite fires, especially after a harsh wildfire season.
A scorching heat wave has been affecting Europe since May, exacerbating the wildfire situation in Spain. Over 400 fires have consumed more than 603,000 acres of land this year. To prevent eclipse-goers from adding to this toll, authorities are deploying 35,000 officers to large gatherings to detect and prevent potential fires.
Spain offers one of the prime locations to view the solar eclipse, with the path of totality spanning across Spain, Russia, Greenland, Iceland, and Portugal. Only those within the path will witness the moon fully covering the sun. The country anticipates economic gains from eclipse tourism, with an estimated contribution of over 347 million euros.
Despite the wildfire concerns, the enthusiasm for the eclipse remains high among travelers. Professor Jan Cami from Western University notes the universal appeal of witnessing such a natural spectacle. The upcoming solar eclipses in Spain in the following years are also expected to draw significant astrotourism, with the potential for unique viewing experiences in different regions.
