For those who fear spiders, it’s not good news as spider season has arrived. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive method to keep them away.
As autumn progresses in the UK, many are embracing the colder climate by wearing cozy clothes and enjoying spiced lattes. However, this time of the year also welcomes more spiders into our homes.
In lower temperatures, these unpleasant insects seek warmth and refuge indoors, leaving their webs behind and causing anxiety for arachnophobes. Early autumn also signals the beginning of spider mating season, leading to a higher number of them crawling around than usual.
Nancy Emery, a cleaning expert at Tap Warehouse, explains that as rain and cold weather drive spiders inside, our homes become an ideal environment for them to survive the chilly autumn temperatures.
“Homes also provide a sheltered space for house spiders to breed during mating season, facilitating their reproduction and population growth in the warm corners of your house,” says Nancy.
So, how can you effectively eliminate them? Nancy recommends using strong scents to repel these eight-legged creatures.
She suggests, “Certain strong scents are known to deter spiders. An easy, cost-effective, and non-toxic solution is creating a spider deterring spray using water and white vinegar.”
The acetic acid in white vinegar makes it an effective deterrent for spiders due to its irritant properties.
Nancy advises, “Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. The strong odor will discourage spiders from settling in your home. Spray the mixture around windows, doors, and any areas where spiders tend to enter.”
Most likely, you have vinegar in your kitchen cupboard. If not, you can purchase a bottle of Distilled Vinegar from Tesco for 35p.
If the scent of vinegar is not appealing to you, Nancy recommends using peppermint oil and water as a “less offensive-smelling repellent.”
