Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh has set ambitious goals for the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in two years, aiming for five individual gold medals. Her preparations over the past year have been focused on achieving this feat. The Pan Pacific swimming championships taking place this week in Los Angeles will provide an initial assessment of her progress towards her Olympic aspirations.
As McIntosh arrived for the championship, she expressed her excitement about competing in the same city where she hopes to shine in 2028. Reflecting on her expectations for the upcoming Games, McIntosh shared her enthusiasm, stating, “Every day I think about L.A. and I’m so excited for it. So to be in California I think is really special. Even just being in the state where the Olympics will be held is significant to me.”
Having secured three gold medals at the Paris Olympics, McIntosh has become a standout figure in the swimming world. She currently holds four individual long-course world records in various events. Notably, her latest world record in the 200m butterfly, achieved at the Canadian trials in Montreal, was an exceptional feat as she surpassed a longstanding women’s world record dating back to 2009.
Despite facing a setback due to illness following her record-breaking swim, McIntosh has recovered and is fully prepared for the Pan Pacific Championships. She emphasized the importance of regaining her health swiftly to focus on the upcoming competition, determined to avoid any further setbacks.
Competing as part of the Canadian team at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, California, McIntosh is participating in her first Pan Pacs championships. The 2022 event was canceled due to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, making this year’s competition particularly significant for McIntosh.
Under the guidance of renowned coach Bob Bowman, McIntosh is set to compete in multiple events at the championships. She expressed her excitement about the upcoming races and her readiness to face top competitors on the international stage. McIntosh’s positive outlook and dedication to her training suggest she is well-positioned to deliver impressive performances at the Pan Pacific Championships.
Looking ahead to the competition, McIntosh remains focused on her goals and is eager to make a mark in the pool. With the support of her coach and a strong training regimen, she is poised to showcase her talent and determination in pursuit of her Olympic dreams.
