Toronto Hydro has successfully restored power to numerous areas in the east end and downtown Toronto following an outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. The utility announced on the social media platform X that power was fully restored by 10:30 p.m. Toronto Hydro expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the outage and thanked customers and the community for their patience during the restoration process.

As per the outage map, over 31,000 customers experienced the power disruption by 9:40 p.m. Toronto Hydro attributed the widespread outage to a loss of supply from Hydro One. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) noted that the outage impacted elevators and escalators at several Line 2 subway stations at one point.

In a statement released on Wednesday night, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) disclosed power failures in multiple buildings, advising immediate evacuation or avoidance of the affected areas. The buildings, including Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall at the Toronto Campus, had reported outages. TMU emphasized the need for evacuation due to potential safety system risks like fire detection and sprinklers being compromised.

TMU instructed a temporary pause in classes, labs, and exams during the evacuation. Employees were advised to seek alternative workspaces or take nearby breaks until power was fully reinstated.
