“Toronto TTC Introduces Fare Capping Trial”

Date:

Starting in the upcoming month, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) passengers will only be required to pay for their initial 47 trips as part of the city’s new fare capping trial. This initiative will commence on September 1, enabling commuters to travel at no cost after completing 47 trips within a single calendar month using the same payment card.

The fare capping program, approved in the city’s budget back in February, is designed to enhance affordability and provide riders with greater flexibility, as highlighted by Mayor Olivia Chow during a recent press briefing on the pilot project. Mayor Chow emphasized the advantage of not being tied to a pass if travel plans change.

Previously, adult monthly TTC passes cost $156, necessitating approximately 47 trips to achieve their full value. Without the fare capping system, passengers had to pay the full pass price upfront, regardless of whether they utilized its benefits fully.

Councilor Jaamal Myers, who heads the TTC Board, mentioned that from September onwards, customers can simply tap their card and proceed without worrying about fare calculations. Concurrent with the introduction of the new pilot, the Youth, Adult, Senior, and Fair Pass Transit Discount Program TTC Monthly Passes will be discontinued by the conclusion of August, according to a recent TTC press release.

The initial estimate for the fare capping program in 2026 was $3.5 million, split between $2.9 million from the TTC and $600,000 from the city. Additionally, the 2026 budget incorporates a fare freeze for the third consecutive year, in conjunction with the fare capping initiative.
