A tragic incident occurred in a First Nation community in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba as two brothers, aged one and two, drowned on Wednesday, according to the RCMP. The local police received a report about the toddlers being brought to Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Family members discovered the boys in a nearby lake and took them to the nursing station with the assistance of First Nation safety officers, where they were pronounced dead.
Authorities believe that the boys wandered away from their home and entered the lake on their own accord, with no suspicion of foul play. The Grand Chief of Anisininew Okimawin, Alex McDougall, expressed deep sorrow for the loss of the young members of Garden Hill Anisininew Nation and highlighted the community’s support for the grieving family.
The tragic incident has deeply impacted the residents, with the family even taking precautions by building a fence to prevent direct access to the water. The community is currently rallying together to provide support and resources to the immediate family during this difficult time.
The location of Garden Hill is approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office reported a total of five drowning deaths in Manitoba in 2026, including this recent incident. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito acknowledged the challenges of such tragedies and assured that the RCMP will provide assistance and support to the affected family.
Expressing empathy for the family and community, Sgt. Hipolito emphasized the importance of allowing the family to grieve in their own way and offered his hope for their healing and recovery.
