A tragic incident in Uganda has resulted in the loss of at least 63 lives as two buses collided on a highway, causing a massive pile-up. The drivers of the buses were traveling in opposite directions and attempted to overtake other vehicles, leading to a head-on collision. One bus swerved to avoid a crash but ended up crashing into the other bus, both of which were carrying passengers.

The impact of the collision caused a chain reaction, leaving both buses severely damaged on the highway. Several oncoming cars skidded and flipped while trying to evade the wreckage. Upon reaching the scene in Kitaleba village, rescue teams found numerous injured passengers on the roadside. Authorities are concerned that the casualty count may rise due to the severity of injuries sustained by the passengers.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, resulting in one bus being completely destroyed. Images from the scene depict the wreckage of the bus and a flipped car, with workers clearing debris from the area.

Other vehicles involved in the collision included a Toyota and a Tata lorry truck, as confirmed by the police. Injured passengers have been transported to a hospital in Kiryandongo, while authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

A police statement highlighted that the collision occurred during overtaking maneuvers by both buses and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly avoiding risky overtaking practices. Fatal road accidents are unfortunately common in Uganda due to narrow roads, with speeding drivers often being held responsible for such tragedies.

In a recent incident in August, a bus carrying mourners from a funeral in Kenya overturned, resulting in the deaths of 25 individuals and injuries to many others. Statistics indicate a concerning rise in the number of fatalities and injuries from road accidents in Uganda in recent years, with careless overtaking and speeding accounting for a significant portion of crashes.

Official police data revealed that 5,144 people lost their lives in road accidents in Uganda in 2024, marking an increase from previous years. The latest crime report from the police indicated that 44.5% of documented crashes in 2024 were attributed to careless overtaking and speeding.
