A tragic incident occurred in western Alaska as a plane carrying eight individuals crashed at a remote military site, resulting in the loss of all lives on board. The fatal crash happened during the aircraft’s second attempt to land on the gravel airstrip in dense fog conditions, according to officials. The pilots were navigating solely by instruments due to poor visibility, leading to the unfortunate accident about 500 meters from the runway.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that the initial landing was aborted as per regulations due to the challenging weather conditions. The crash site, surrounded by mountains, poses significant challenges for pilots, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to recommend the use of GPS and instruments during landings.
Among the passengers were two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers employees and four contractors, two of whom were affiliated with Calista Brice, a subsidiary of Calista Corp., an Alaska Native regional corporation. The exact nature of the work being carried out at the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, located approximately 725 kilometers west of Anchorage, remains undisclosed by the military.
In response to the tragic event, U.S. Air Force Lt.-Gen. Robert Davis expressed deep sorrow, highlighting the dedication of the individuals involved in executing essential tasks under challenging circumstances. NTSB investigators are en route to the crash site to gather further information.
The Cape Newenham site, established in the 1950s for early missile attack detection, now serves as a critical monitoring point for air activities in the region. The incident occurred amidst worsening weather conditions, with heavy fog impacting visibility in the area.
The airstrip, managed by the Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center, is part of a network of radar sites overseeing airspace activities in Alaska. The tragic flight was operated by Security Aviation, an Anchorage-based charter company, which has yet to provide any official statements regarding the crash.
