U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed strong support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, emphasizing that removing him from his position would be a significant error. Trump praised Infantino for his leadership during the recent highly successful World Cup, stating that without him, future tournaments would not achieve the same level of success.
This endorsement from Trump follows a joint open letter from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF criticizing Infantino’s handling of a proposed sale of commercial rights to the World Cup. The letter highlighted concerns about Infantino’s actions, calling for an independent review of the situation to address the breach of trust and lack of unity in football leadership. Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed reservations about Infantino’s leadership based on recent events.
Infantino has faced backlash within the football community after proposing and subsequently abandoning a plan to sell a portion of the World Cup’s commercial rights to private investors. This move, which aimed to generate billions in revenue, drew criticism from various federations, prompting threats of tournament boycotts until assurances are made against similar proposals in the future.
Despite some support for Infantino from certain confederations and federations, including CAF, Mexico, and South American countries, calls for his resignation have intensified. The ongoing controversy has led to a divide among football governing bodies, with conflicting opinions on Infantino’s leadership and the need for transparent reviews of his actions. FIFA has defended Infantino against allegations and emphasized the importance of upholding democratic procedures in addressing leadership challenges.
