The planned meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Hungary has been called off, heightening concerns about the potential for World War 3. Discussions aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine were postponed, with the meeting originally slated for Budapest, but without a confirmed date.
The decision to delay the meeting came after a conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that there was no immediate need for the leaders to convene, emphasizing the necessity for thorough preparation beforehand.
This postponement adds to a series of unsuccessful attempts by Trump to address the Ukrainian crisis, despite his previous assertion that a resolution could be achieved swiftly. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders have accused Putin of prolonging the conflict to advance his military agenda during diplomatic talks.
Zelensky highlighted that Putin only engaged in diplomacy and contacted Trump after concerns arose about potential US support for Ukraine with advanced weaponry. Stressing the urgency for peace, Zelensky emphasized the importance of applying pressure to end the war.
Recent developments saw Trump seemingly shifting his stance on Ukrainian territorial concessions as a prerequisite for peace, only to revert to a call for both Russia and Kyiv to halt their actions following discussions with Putin.
Efforts are being made by Ukrainian and European leaders to align with Trump’s stance on ending hostilities promptly, advocating for negotiations to commence based on the current front lines.
Further discussions regarding additional economic sanctions on Russia are expected to take place during an upcoming EU summit in Brussels, signaling a potential escalation in international measures against the ongoing conflict.
