The UK Government has arranged flights to assist British citizens in departing Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. Efforts are underway to evacuate individuals as the death toll continues to climb in the aftermath of the catastrophic weather event. Jamaica has confirmed five fatalities, with Haiti reporting at least 20 casualties due to severe flooding triggered by the powerful category five storm, which featured wind speeds of 185mph, ranking it among the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record.
In response to the crisis, the UK has pledged £2.5 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Jamaica. Keir Starmer expressed shock at the destruction witnessed, while the Prime Minister informed Parliament that HMS Trent and specialized rapid deployment teams have been strategically positioned in the region to provide support.
The affected areas are grappling with power outages, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing floods, with Hurricane Melissa now downgraded to a category one storm, expected to bring further heavy rain and strong winds.
More than 25,000 individuals sought refuge in shelters in Jamaica after their homes were devastated by the storm. Dana Morris Dixon, the country’s education minister, revealed that a significant portion of the island, approximately 77%, is without electricity.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness assured the public that the government is fully mobilized for recovery efforts, emphasizing the need for time to restore normalcy. Relief supplies are being readied to aid the affected population.
The coastal community of Black River suffered extensive damage, with Prime Minister Holness describing it as the epicenter of the destruction. Communication challenges persist due to a widespread blackout, hindering damage assessment efforts, as highlighted by Richard Thompson, the acting director general of Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management.
