The Prime Minister has made a commitment to support upcoming generations by announcing a set of agreements aimed at advancing the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
Keir Starmer is scheduled to participate in COP 30 in Belem, Brazil, where he will stress the economic potential of clean energy in the 21st century, emphasizing its capacity to create numerous job opportunities and foster economic growth.
His upcoming speech coincides with the unveiling of various partnerships with firms like ScottishPower, JERA Nex bp, EnBW, and Statera Energy by government officials.
Before his address, the Prime Minister highlighted that the UK has seen £50 billion in investments in clean energy sectors over the past year, with an expectation of creating 800,000 jobs by the end of the decade.
He stated, “Our efforts to drive the clean power revolution are in full swing – ensuring energy security, reducing bills permanently, and fostering growth in communities throughout the UK.
“By generating skilled, well-paid positions in areas like Great Yarmouth, Belfast, and Greater Manchester, we are actively renewing our nation and advocating for the well-being of workers nationwide.
“I am committed to not disappointing future generations. At COP30, I will continue to demonstrate the UK’s leadership on the global stage, collaborating with others to safeguard our values and secure our future.”
Among the agreements reached is over £100 million allocated to Belfast Harbour to facilitate the construction of two significant offshore wind farms in the Irish Sea, while Carrington in Greater Manchester is set to host one of the largest battery installations in the UK.
Further investments include support for the Port of East Anglia, with £15 million designated for a new operations and maintenance center as part of a broader £28 million upgrade, along with Scottish Power backing the East Anglia TWO windfarm in the North Sea. Additionally, Scottish Power and Peel Ports Group have committed £10 million to enhance the port’s Northern Terminal for future offshore wind projects, creating an estimated 100 jobs.
Expressing unwavering dedication to the UK’s energy commitments, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband affirmed, “At COP30, the UK’s message to the world is clear: collaborative efforts to combat climate change will lead to favorable job opportunities, energy security, and economic growth – let’s proceed with determination.”
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister informed sixth form students of his attendance at COP, emphasizing the imperative to protect the planet for future generations and preserve hundreds of thousands of jobs in the UK.
