I have recently come back from providing essential assistance to emergency responders and labor union members in the Donbas region of Ukraine. Despite facing daily challenges such as power outages, missile attacks, and civilian casualties in various settings, including homes, schools, hospitals, and kindergartens, the Ukrainian people exhibit remarkable resilience. Their desire for peace is unwavering, yet they refuse to surrender their nation to Russian control and the harsh realities of living under occupation.

During my visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children who had been rescued from the occupied territories, with alarming reports indicating that one in ten had experienced sexual abuse. The number of children believed to have been abducted by Russia exceeds 20,000, suggesting widespread child exploitation on a disturbing scale.

The refusal of sanctioned Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich to release £2.5 billion from the Chelsea FC sale to assist Ukraine, coupled with his legal battles over frozen assets in Jersey, is concerning. Particularly troubling is the involvement of Lord Wolfson KC, a Conservative peer and Shadow Attorney General, in representing Abramovich. Given Abramovich’s status as a sanctioned oligarch with close ties to Putin, this partnership with Lord Wolfson and former Trump adviser Eric Herschmann raises doubts about the normalization of relationships with Russian oligarchs.

The ongoing legal disputes involving Abramovich and the political climate, where far-right and populist figures advocate for closer ties with Moscow, underscore the urgent need to address these complex issues. The broader context of global politics, including the normalization of relations with Russia, demands a critical examination of the actions taken by prominent figures like Lord Wolfson and the implications for democracy.

In response to these developments, calls for accountability within the Tory party under Kemi Badenoch’s leadership are growing. The Labour government is urged to take decisive action by implementing emergency legislation to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and transferring the approximately £30 billion in frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

As Ukraine faces immense challenges in its struggle for democracy, solidarity from the international community is crucial. A demonstration outside Tory Headquarters on Wednesday, January 7th at 5 pm is planned to show support for Ukraine and demand action on these pressing issues.
