Broadband has become a crucial aspect of daily life, supporting activities like streaming entertainment, remote work, home security through internet-connected cameras, and managing smart home devices such as lights and thermostats.
As households increasingly rely on internet-connected devices and online content streaming, the demand for fast and reliable broadband access is higher than ever. However, not all internet service providers (ISPs) offer the same level of performance.
SpeedGo, a new broadband speed-testing service, reveals disparities in ISP performance. According to SpeedGo’s data, Virgin Media leads the UK with an impressive average download speed of 256.5Mbps, allowing for quick downloads like a full HD movie in just over two minutes—three times faster than the national average.
Following Virgin Media, Vodafone ranks second with average download speeds of 175Mbps, followed by BT (EE). TalkTalk lags at the bottom of the list with an average speed of nearly 95Mbps.
The rankings of average download speeds among major UK ISPs are as follows:
– Virgin Media: 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone: 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE): 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband: 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk: 94.7Mbps
SpeedGo also highlights the importance of upload speeds, especially for users who frequently send large files or work remotely. Vodafone leads in this category with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, surpassing Virgin Media, which secures the second spot with 47.2Mbps.
SpeedGo’s analysis underscores that in 2025, Virgin Media provided the fastest broadband internet in the United Kingdom, boasting an average download speed of 256.5Mbps, while Vodafone achieved the highest average upload speed at 83.6Mbps.
