Vodafone has introduced a novel way to connect to the internet. Rather than relying on traditional copper or fiber optic cables, the company’s latest Wi-Fi router operates through a 5G mobile network for downloading files and streaming movies.
This innovative solution is particularly beneficial for households that currently lack access to high-speed fiber connections or for individuals seeking more versatility. The portability of the device allows for easy relocation, making it suitable for renters or students who frequently change residences.
Additionally, the installation process is straightforward. Since the router is powered by Vodafone’s network, there is no need for professional installation services or drilling into walls. Users can simply plug it into a power source, turn it on, and instantly connect to the internet.
It is important to note that this new system offers speeds of up to 150Mbps, which is adequate for activities like streaming Netflix, sending emails, and working from home. However, it falls short of the speeds provided by full fiber connections, which can exceed 900Mbps.
For example, downloading a full HD movie using this 5G router takes approximately 8 minutes, compared to just 40 seconds with a fiber gigabit connection. To assist consumers in making informed decisions, Vodafone is launching an integrated availability checker on their website to help users determine the best connection option based on their location.
This is not the first time Vodafone has offered internet access via 5G technology. The previous GigaCube device has been replaced by this new router. Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, emphasized the importance of offering fast and reliable broadband options to households currently facing slow and unreliable connections.
Vodafone’s 5G Broadband plans start at £21 per month, while Three, also part of Vodafone, provides a similar service with home broadband priced at £11 for the initial nine months.
