“West End St. John’s Library Relocation Faces Setbacks, Advocate Remains Hopeful”

Date:

A bid to relocate a west end St. John’s library is facing difficulties, yet an advocate remains hopeful for a prompt resolution. The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago following the expiration of its lease agreement. Despite the provincial government issuing a tender for a new location, no submissions were received, as initially reported by AllNewfoundlandLabrador.

Expressing frustration and disappointment, Josh Smee, vice-chair of the Friends of the St. John’s Public Library non-profit advisory board, emphasized the community’s need for a library. While acknowledging the library’s modest size, Smee highlighted its popularity among patrons. He expressed concern over the prolonged process due to the unsuccessful tender but remains optimistic about reopening the library in the west end.

In response, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Janelle Simms stated that consultations with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries are ongoing to determine the next steps, affirming the commitment to keeping the library in the west end of St. John’s. Smee urged landlords with available space in the area to engage in the process, citing potential oversights in the previous tender.

The advocate anticipates a revised tender to yield successful outcomes in the future. Recognizing the community’s strong attachment to the library and the dedicated efforts of the staff, Smee emphasized the desire for the branch’s return. Library patron Juanette Anthony expressed her reliance on the Michael Donovan Public Library for computer access and book resources, underscoring the convenience and importance of its services.

As efforts continue to secure a new home for the library, stakeholders remain committed to meeting the community’s needs and restoring this vital resource.
