Wetherspoon reveals plans to launch a new pub on the premises of the University of Birmingham. The popular pub chain is set to introduce Joe’s at the university campus through a fresh collaboration. Named after the iconic clock tower of the University of Birmingham, Joe’s will be overseen by the Guild of Students.
Scheduled for an opening in Easter 2026 following substantial renovations, the new establishment will offer the complete Wetherspoon food and beverage selection, including special weekly deals like the Thursday Curry Club. Wetherspoon, with a network of nearly 800 pubs nationwide, previously inaugurated its initial university pub at Hull University in 2022.
Expressing enthusiasm about the partnership, Wetherspoon’s chief executive, John Hutson, stated, “We are thrilled to have forged this alliance with the Guild of Students and are eager to collaborate in making Joe’s Bar a resounding success.”
University of Birmingham Guild of Students President, Antonia Listrat, remarked, “Through our association with Wetherspoon, students will not only enjoy the cost-effective food and drink options but also witness an increase in job opportunities within the bar. As a charitable organization and the student union for over 36,000 students, any surplus generated is reinvested in supporting student activities. This collaboration will fortify our commercial ventures to bolster a dynamic future for the Guild and enrich the overall student experience.”
Additionally, Wetherspoon is on track to launch six new pubs by mid-January. This development follows the introduction of its Christmas menu, featuring the comeback of its popular budget turkey dinner. The festive feast comprises turkey breast slices, pork, sage and onion stuffing, roasted carrots and parsnips, mashed potatoes, pigs-in-blankets, peas, cranberry sauce, and gravy.
Priced at an average of £13.99 with a soft drink or £15.52 with an alcoholic beverage, the menu item reflects a slight increase compared to the previous year’s pricing. The Christmas menu will be accessible until December 31.
Despite reporting improved sales and profits in the past year, Wetherspoon’s chairman, Tim Martin, affirmed the company’s commitment to keeping price hikes minimal. In response to rising taxes affecting the broader pub industry, Martin emphasized Wetherspoon’s dedication to limiting price adjustments.
This initiative aligns with Wetherspoon’s pledge to maintain competitive pricing amidst industry challenges, ensuring continued value for its patrons.
