A three-year-old British girl named Cheryl Grimmer disappeared without a trace 55 years ago while her family was enjoying a day at the beach. Cheryl, along with her parents Carole and Vince and brothers Ricki, Stephen, and Paul, had relocated from Bristol to Australia in 1968 for a fresh start.
On January 12, 1970, the day Cheryl went missing, she had been at the beach with her mother and brothers while their father, Vince, was away serving in the Australian army. When it was time to leave around 1:30pm, Carole gathered their belongings while the children went to the shower block.
Cheryl’s older brother, Ricki, informed their mother that Cheryl was not coming out of the shower cubicle. When Carole rushed to the scene, Cheryl had vanished, sparking panic and a frantic search for the little girl.
Despite multiple theories, including accidental drowning or abduction, the case remained unsolved for years. A local teenager, known as Mercury, confessed to Cheryl’s murder in the early 1970s but was not charged due to lack of evidence.
In 2016, the case was reopened, leading to Mercury’s arrest in 2017. However, the trial was dismissed, and Mercury’s identity remained protected. Recently, Australian parliament member Jeremy Buckingham revealed Mercury’s real name and called for a new investigation into Cheryl’s murder.
Cheryl’s family, who never got closure, urged Mercury to explain his confession details or face public identification. Ricki, Cheryl’s brother, expressed regret for leaving his sister that fateful day and pledged to continue the search for answers regarding her disappearance.
The tragic event has haunted Cheryl’s family for over five decades, with her parents passing away without knowing the truth.
