EE mobile customers are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message, as per cybersecurity specialists at Bitdefender. The message warns recipients that they are on the brink of losing a significant amount of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
Bitdefender issued a warning on Instagram advising individuals to be wary of urgent messages claiming that a substantial number of EE reward points are set to expire within a short timeframe. These messages are likely fraudulent attempts to deceive users.
Cybercriminals are posing as EE network representatives to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links that lead to fake websites. These websites are crafted to extract login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit illicitly.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency, hoping that recipients will act hastily without proper consideration.
According to Bitdefender, scammers employ a tactic of setting tight deadlines to induce a feeling of impending loss, manipulating users into clicking on deceptive links that do not lead to EE’s official platform.
Genuine EE alerts are only accessible within users’ official EE accounts and not through unsolicited texts. Any message pressuring recipients with countdowns or urgent demands should raise suspicion. Users are advised to forward suspicious texts to 7726 and delete them promptly.
This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers and is not a new phenomenon. Earlier this year, users reported receiving convincing fake messages related to reward points.
EE emphasizes that it does not administer a points program and has highlighted examples of scam messages, such as those urging users to click on a link to redeem points that are about to expire.
