Prince Andrew has reportedly spent £10 million on renovating his Royal Lodge in Windsor despite relinquishing his royal titles. The 65-year-old will continue to reside at the property, which he has occupied for the past two decades, even after stepping away from his Duke of York title.
Royal author Andrew Lownie believes that Andrew will stay at the residence as long as he can afford to, considering it a significant status symbol tied to the monarchy. Lownie mentioned that Andrew could choose to leave the mansion voluntarily but indications suggest he intends to stay, having invested a substantial sum in its restoration.
According to The Times, Andrew made the decision to forgo the use of his titles after discussions with the King and other family members. This move marks a significant shift, as it is rare for a senior royal to cease using a dukedom, the last instance being over a century ago during Queen Victoria’s reign.
In a statement from Buckingham Palace, Andrew expressed that ongoing accusations against him were overshadowing the royal family’s work, leading to his decision to no longer use his titles. Despite this change, he will retain his prince status and position in the line of succession. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will revert to her maiden name and no longer hold her courtesy royal divorcee title.
Additionally, Andrew will not participate in the royal family’s Christmas festivities at Sandringham, signaling a departure from his usual public appearances during the holiday season.
