On Halloween, Trump and Melania dressed up as themselves. They distributed candies to children on the White House lawn, continuing the tradition despite the ongoing government shutdown. Trump, after the candy distribution, acknowledged the prolonged shutdown, which, if it persists until Wednesday, will become the longest in history.

The shutdown originated from budget proposals by Republicans, at the direction of Trump, aiming to reduce social spending and exclude a vital healthcare tax credit extension. With insufficient Senate votes to progress, Democrats have utilized filibustering to impede Republican actions. Trump has urged Republicans to take bold actions, including eliminating the filibuster through what he terms as the “Nuclear Option.”

The ongoing shutdown has left government employees unpaid, including essential personnel like troops and air traffic controllers. Efforts to resolve the impasse have been met with resistance, as Democrats demand the reversal of social spending cuts before reopening the government.

In another controversial move, the Trump administration announced a significant reduction in the refugee intake cap to 7,500 annually, predominantly favoring white South Africans. Lawmakers have criticized the administration for bypassing the legal requirement to consult Congress on such decisions.

Despite these developments, the political landscape remains tumultuous, with debates on military actions, refugee policies, and government funding at the forefront. Stay informed by joining our Politics WhatsApp group for exclusive updates and insights.
