Emails from the spouse of Rachel Reeves will be released later today amidst an ongoing dispute concerning their rented residence.

This development follows the acknowledgment by the Chancellor last night of an unintentional oversight in failing to secure a license for renting out their property in Dulwich. The property in south London, jointly owned with her spouse, was listed for sale after the relocation to No11 Downing Street subsequent to the Labour Party’s electoral success last summer.

A spokesperson for No 10 stated this afternoon: “After a review of the communications sent and received by the Chancellor’s spouse, new details have emerged. This information has been forwarded to the Prime Minister and his independent advisor.”

However, Downing Street emphasized that the Prime Minister continues to have faith in the Chancellor and assured that Ms. Reeves will present the Budget on November 26. This statement came after Mr. Starmer voiced his support for Ms. Reeves on Wednesday evening, following her apology for renting out their family dwelling without the necessary license.

The Chancellor informed the Prime Minister that, unfortunately, they were unaware of the requirement for a “selective license” in their Southwark area in London, where they leased their property for £3,200 monthly upon moving into No 11.

The Southwark Council mandates individuals renting out properties in specific zones to obtain a license in advance.

Ms. Reeves stated: “Unfortunately, we were unaware of the licensing requirement and hence did not secure the license prior to renting out the property. This was an inadvertent error. Upon becoming aware of this, we promptly took corrective measures and have applied for the license. I sincerely apologize for this oversight and I am willing to address any inquiries.”

In his response, Mr. Starmer expressed his satisfaction that the “issue can be resolved” after consulting his ethics advisor. He mentioned: “I have consulted with my Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards this evening.

“He has advised me that given your unintentional failure to obtain the necessary license for your rental property – and considering your prompt actions to rectify the situation, including your apology – further investigation is unnecessary.”

The Prime Minister added: “It is unfortunate that the proper license was not sought earlier, and it is commendable that you have taken the necessary steps today to address this issue. It is evident to me that you are handling this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.”

Local councils possess the authority to compel individuals renting out residences in specific areas to acquire a selective license. This measure aims to safeguard tenants against substandard rental properties and may be implemented due to concerns regarding persistent anti-social behavior issues in rental accommodations.
