Richard Hopkins, the former head of Red Bull, has shared an update on Michael Schumacher’s health and expressed doubt about the public ever seeing the Formula 1 icon again. Schumacher’s well-being has remained confidential since he sustained a head injury in a skiing mishap in December 2013.
Following the accident over a decade ago, Schumacher, now 56, was placed in a medically induced coma, keeping his health status away from public scrutiny. Hopkins, who was previously in charge at Red Bull and had a close bond with Schumacher during his racing days, emphasized the importance of maintaining privacy regarding Schumacher’s condition.
In a recent interview with SPORTbible via William Hill, Hopkins mentioned that he has not received any recent updates on Schumacher’s health. He commented on the secrecy surrounding Schumacher’s condition, attributing it to the family’s desire for privacy. Hopkins acknowledged that he is not part of the inner circle privy to Schumacher’s current state, unlike notable figures like Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Gerhard Berger who have visited Schumacher.
Having established a friendship with Schumacher in the 1990s while working at McLaren and later holding a senior position at Red Bull, Hopkins underscored that he respects the family’s decision to keep Schumacher’s health details confidential. Despite not being as close to key individuals like Todt, Brawn, or Berger, Hopkins highlighted the general understanding and respect for the family’s wishes to maintain discretion regarding Schumacher’s condition.
Hopkins also pointed out the unwavering respect and confidentiality surrounding any visits to Schumacher, stressing the family’s wishes and the importance of upholding their privacy. He emphasized that even if he were privy to information, he would not disclose it out of respect for the family’s wishes.
