Police in a town are currently investigating five troubling incidents involving rat poisoning, with one of the victims being a child. The occurrences have been limited to three families residing in the same vicinity, and authorities have ruled out any connection to food establishments.

Recently, five individuals were rushed to different hospitals amid concerns that they had consumed contaminated takeaway food, only to find out they had likely ingested brodifacoum, a common component in rat poison. This substance disrupts the blood clotting process by interfering with vitamin K, leading to blood thinning.

Symptoms of brodifacoum poisoning may manifest after several days and can be severe, including bleeding gums, easy bruising, labored breathing, and blood in urine or feces. In extreme cases, ingestion of brodifacoum can be fatal, with a lethal dose estimated at around 15mg per kg of body weight.

The incidents occurred in Brisbane, Australia, where the affected individuals were treated at Logan and Princess Alexandra hospitals. Officials, including Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls, emphasized that investigations are ongoing to pinpoint the source of the poisoning, with no evidence linking it to any specific food outlets.

Chief Health Officer Catherine McDougall confirmed that the cases are not deemed suspicious, and efforts are being made to establish connections between the victims. Health authorities are collaborating with the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

As of now, no new cases have emerged, but medical professionals have been advised to remain vigilant for patients showing unexplained signs of bleeding. Treatment has been provided to the affected individuals, with some having spent time in the hospital receiving vitamin K therapy.

The Queensland police are now working alongside health officials to further probe the incidents. The community is encouraged to come forward with any relevant information that could assist in the investigation.
