Caring grandparents Larry and Deborah Dutton, who adopted their granddaughter Heidi in Dewey, Oklahoma, provided a nurturing environment for her. The Duttons, known for their generosity in the tight-knit community, had raised Heidi from infancy as their own child.
Larry, a retired US Air Force master staff sergeant and former airport manager, and Deborah, a retired Air Force veteran and chef, had been married for 40 years. Active church members, they were respected for their kindness and community involvement.
Heidi, then 17, had been dating Lucas Walker, 20, for a few months, leading to a change in her behavior. Concerns arose in January 2023 when neighbors noticed the absence of the Duttons since before Christmas, prompting requests for a welfare check by authorities.
When police visited the property on January 19, they detected a foul odor and suspicious cleaning efforts. A subsequent search revealed bloodstains and hidden evidence, eventually leading to the discovery of Deborah and Larry’s bodies in a shallow grave in the backyard.
Dutton and Walker were arrested after confessing to the murders, revealing a planned and violent attack on the elderly couple. Walker admitted to shooting and stabbing the Duttons, while Dutton initially took responsibility but later shifted blame to Walker.
The shocking crime exposed a gruesome scene at the Dutton home, where the teenagers had attempted to cover up the murders but continued living there. Walker pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, receiving a 35-year sentence, while Dutton pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and other charges, receiving a life sentence with parole eligibility after serving 85% of a 45-year term.
The district attorney emphasized the severity of the crime, acknowledging Dutton’s accountability and the impact on the victims’ family. The tragic outcome underscored the betrayal by Heidi, who had been provided a loving home by her grandparents only to orchestrate their brutal deaths.
