An 11-year-old boy was rescued after being found underweight and covered in feces, having been locked in his room by his mother. Rachel Nicole Blaylock, 40, was apprehended by authorities in Baytown, Texas, following a distress call for a welfare check on her child at their caravan.

Upon arrival, an officer detailed the scene inside the house as infested with flies and reeking of excrement, causing physical distress. The non-verbal autistic child, weighing a mere 46 pounds (20kg), was discovered in a bedroom with fecal matter on his body and nails.

Investigations revealed that the boy had been confined to the room with a screen door locked from the outside, allowing Blaylock to monitor him. The same officer described the child’s living conditions as unsanitary, with his mattress covered in filth and fecal matter scattered around.

Blaylock was instructed to take her son to the hospital, but she reportedly refused, citing inconvenience and distrust in medical professionals. Subsequent medical evaluations diagnosed the child with severe autism and extensive dental decay due to neglect. Blaylock faced charges of child injury and a separate charge of methamphetamine possession, with a bond set at $250,000 (£186,000).

Documents included complaints from the boy’s grandmother, who alleged prolonged confinement in his room, hindering access to food and water. She also highlighted the child’s lack of schooling, inability to manage basic hygiene, and tendency to undress frequently. The grandmother criticized Blaylock’s parenting, stating a lack of engagement with the child.

Furthermore, it was disclosed that Child Protective Services had previously advised Blaylock to seek medical attention for the child’s alarming weight. The average weight for an 11-year-old boy in the US is 79 pounds (35kg).
