Food prices have been steadily increasing due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. This trend is evident in supermarkets, where consumers often find their favorite products becoming more expensive. To cope with rising costs, many people have turned to purchasing cheaper supermarket own-brand products instead of well-known brands.

A recent visit to Marks & Spencer highlighted this issue, as even this upscale retailer has seen price hikes on everyday items. For instance, their Classic Mayonnaise, priced at £1.50 for a 500ml tub, is now more costly than similar products at other supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

However, the introduction of M&S’ new Only… Ingredients range showcased a significant price disparity. The Olive Oil Mayonnaise, made with only six ingredients, was priced at an astonishing £4.50 for a 250g tub, compared to the Classic Mayonnaise.

The higher cost of olive oil in recent years has contributed to the price surge of products containing it, like the Olive Oil Mayonnaise. Despite the justification for quality ingredients, the substantial price difference between the two M&S mayonnaises has raised eyebrows among consumers.

While some products in the Only… Ingredients range remain reasonably priced compared to their counterparts, the premium charged for specific items like the Olive Oil Mayonnaise has sparked concerns about affordability in the range. Despite the quality and simplicity of the ingredients, consumers are wary of overpaying for basic food items.

The global rise in olive oil prices, driven by factors such as reduced supply from poor harvests, supply and demand imbalances, higher import costs, currency effects, and retail pricing strategies, has significantly impacted the cost of olive oil-based products in the UK.

As consumers navigate these challenges, it is essential for retailers like M&S to balance quality and affordability in their product offerings to meet the evolving needs and expectations of shoppers.
