Kindle users received a prior warning about potential restrictions on their e-readers, with the deadline now just 24 hours away on May 20, 2026. This update specifically impacts older models like the Kindle 5 and the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, preventing the addition or reading of new content.

For users concerned about how this Amazon update may affect them, a list of devices set to be restricted from the book store has been compiled below:

– Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
– Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
– Kindle Keyboard (2010)
– Kindle 4 (2011)
– Kindle Touch (2011)
– Kindle 5 (2012)
– Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

Existing owners of these affected devices need not worry about losing access to their current libraries, as their existing collections will remain accessible. However, after the impending deadline, these Kindles will essentially become “read-only” devices.

Amazon informed Mirror Online that starting May 20, 2026, users with Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content from the Kindle Store. Despite the long support period of these models, ranging from 14 to 18 years, technological advancements have rendered ongoing support unfeasible.

While this development is disappointing for owners of older Kindles, Amazon is attempting to ease the transition by offering affected customers a 20% discount on selected new Kindle models, along with a £15 eBook credit.

With a variety of new Kindle options available, including standard models and Colorsoft devices with color screens, users seeking more than just book access may find the Scribe range appealing. The Scribe series comes equipped with a digital pen for note-taking, document annotation, and book markup.
