A Royal Navy destroyer and helicopter were dispatched to participate in a 48-hour NATO mission overseeing a Russian warship in UK waters, marking a significant milestone for the alliance.

Portsmouth-based HMS Duncan was called into action by NATO Allied Maritime Command to shadow the Russian destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov as it traversed the English Channel during the operation.

This deployment represents the first instance of a Royal Navy warship being directed by the alliance for such a task, contributing to broader security measures in northern Europe. The operation was complemented by ongoing efforts of Plymouth-based HMS Somerset in collaboration with NATO in the North Atlantic.

Employing its advanced sensors and systems, the Type 45 destroyer intercepted the Kulakov in the North Sea, monitoring its westward movement through the Channel towards the island of Ushant off the French coast.

A Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron, stationed at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, joined the operation to provide air support and surveillance of the Russian vessel. The coordinated endeavor involved forces from three nations, including a Dutch Air Force NH90 and the French Navy.

The operation highlights the government’s continuous dedication to safeguarding UK waters and upholding national security through the Plan for Change initiative.

Al Carns, Minister for the Armed Forces, emphasized the Royal Navy’s readiness to respond to Russian naval activities, conducting ongoing monitoring operations to protect Britain and its territorial waters.

HMS Duncan’s Commanding Officer, Commander Dan Lee, highlighted the Royal Navy’s commitment to safeguarding UK waters and collaborating seamlessly with NATO allies to ensure the security of shared maritime areas. The close coordination between UK, French, and Dutch forces demonstrated the strength of the alliance and the collective ability to respond to regional activities.

Tracking and escorting the Vice Admiral Kulakov through UK waters exemplified NATO’s interoperability in action. The professionalism and teamwork exhibited by all participants ensured the operation was conducted safely and efficiently, showcasing a shared resolve to uphold international maritime norms.

Commander Matt Millyard of HMS Somerset noted the ship’s deployment since August in support of Operation Relentless, safeguarding the UK’s nuclear deterrent assigned to NATO defense. Participation in SNMG1 further enhanced NATO’s presence in the region, providing the crew with valuable downtime between operational periods.
